Just Call Me Johnny Appleseed

Anonymous public art meets horticulture?

I love the idea of growing things. I don’t know why, I just do. I haven’t done very much of it though — it usually requires more time and discipline than I’m able or willing to give. But, I still love the idea of it. I always have. I especially love the idea of growing things that bear food of some kind — fruit or vegetables. I don’t know, there’s just something attractive about the idea of, through my own care and work, bringing something alive into being and seeing it produce fruit capable of providing sustenance and pleasure to the senses.

This is our first spring in the new house and the previous owners have the left property fairly devoid of any sort of plant life. This needs to be rectified! So, we’ve been deciding on what to plant. I love trees, so we’re putting in a few. And, because I like the idea of fruit in the yard, we’re heading down to a local nursery this week to pick up a 5-in-1 apple tree sapling that will soon find a new home in our back-yard.

In all of the thinking we’ve been doing regarding what type of fruit trees we’d like to plant, my interest in such growing has become rekindled. I’ve been thinking I’d like to plant fruit bearing trees everywhere — all over the place. Everywhere needs trees! Fruit bearing trees! And, during all of this attention to such things, an attractive idea came to me.

Fascism is Alive and well and Living in America.

Derek | Videos, Politics | Sunday, 06 April 2008

…And people tell me I’m crazy when I talk about the resurgence of a fascist mind-set in this society.

How scary is that?

Yeah, yeah, I know… They don’t show all of the myriad of people who called them loons for asking such a ridiculous question. I know all about that. But, I don’t think it really matters all that much. The fact that they, in this day and age, are able to find even a single person with such a stupid, dangerous opinion is absolutely appalling! I weep and fear for the human race. So long as there is one among us who could find such things reasonable, we are, as a species, a horrible and utter failure.

Jee… I wonder how the holocaust was ever able to happen in a modern, sophisticated, industrialized, democratic nation like Germany? It’s baffling… how can such a thing ever take root?

Man, it seems that every day it’s becoming harder and harder to not truly become an anti-American. And, you don’t know how much that breaks my heart.

The Anti-Smoking Movement Is A Group Of Child Abusers

Derek | Smoking | Sunday, 16 March 2008

It’s getting pretty damn scary! If you’re not horrendously disturbed by the level of pernicious indoctrination of youth at the hands of the anti-smoking lobby, then you’re a sick, twisted, fucking blight - plain and simple.

Here’s an essay written by a young person (presumably as part of a school project) that appeared on Yahoo Answers. Read it:

i am doing a persuasive essay on smoking, if u know anything about smoking please help me!!! this is my essay so far? do u like it? do u think it will persuade(convince)people???

Imagine a place where cigarettes were on the ground, people without jobs, and people damaging their body. Do you want to live there? Well if you don’t help prevent people from smoking, the world might turn into that place in a few years. By smoking, people spend their money on cigarettes which can lead to many dangerous things every year.
One reason why smoking is bad is that after people smoke, they put their cigarettes on the ground. It is against the law to litter and sometimes the cigarettes can cause a fire. If you get caught littering or making a fire, you have to pay about $1,000. If you weren’t smoking, you could’ve use that money for something else more useful.
Another reason why smoking is bad is that you won’t get accepted to certain jobs like being a teacher or a doctor. Some jobs, especially working with children, don’t allow smokers. If you don’t have a job, you can’t get money to take care of youself. If you were a smoker, which one is more important to you; money or cigarettes?
The most important reason why smoking is bad is that you damage your body. If you smoke you get bad breath, yellow teeth, smelly clothes, more colds and coughs, and an empty wallet. Also, you damage other people around you. When you are smoking, other people breathe the smoke and it gets into their lungs which can make lung cancer. That is called second-hand smoking.
There are many more reasons why smoking should decrease, but the most important reason is the safety. About 1,000 people gets killed every year. Although the companies who sell cigarettes get money, the hospitals pay more for all the cancer and diseases people get when smoking. Smoking can make you addicted and make it hard for you to stop, but I believe that all smokers should stop immediately.

A Breif History of Gun Control

Derek | General, Politics, Police State | Saturday, 08 March 2008

1929 - The Soviet Union establishes gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, are rounded up and exterminated. This doesn’t include the 30 million ‘Uncle Joe’ starved to death in the Ukraine.

1911 - Turkey establishes gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, are rounded up and exterminated.

1935 - China establishes gun control. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, are rounded up and exterminated.

1938 - Germany establishes gun control. From 1939 to 1945, the populace, unable to defend itself against the Gestapo and SS, results in hundreds of thousands dead.

1956 - Cambodia establishes gun control. From 1975 to 1977, 1-2 million ‘educated’ people, unable to defend themselves, are rounded up and exterminated.

1964 - Guatemala establishes gun control. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, are rounded up and exterminated.

1970 - Uganda establishes gun control. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, are rounded up and exterminated. The total dead are said to be 2-3 million

* Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million minimum.

* Gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government — a program costing Australian taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results:

Australia-wide homicides up by 3.2 percent
Australia-wide assaults up by 8.6 percent
Australia-wide armed robberies up by 44 percent
